The World We Want: New Dimensions in Philanthropy and Social Change By Peter Karoff with Jane Maddox
The book weaves together multi-sector, multidiscipline strategies, but is in large part about the power of human connection, reinforced by personal stories of motivation and the human capacity for caring. Without ignoring the institutional and cultural obstacles, and the courage needed to face down the dark side of human behavior, Karoff shows how citizen engagement and open source solutions could tip the scale toward a better world.
TPI Programmatic Report
TPI’s programmatic work continues to support donors in their efforts to make a difference on the social issues that concern them. Through planning, in-depth research, program design, and other services, TPI’s recent work has enabled our clients to have an impact on school improvement, youth aspirations, community and economic development, racial and ethnic disparities in health care, fostering employee involvement in the community, and a wide range of other social issues. This report will celebrate some of these efforts.
Diaspora Research Initiative This major research initiative explored the growing significance of philanthropic giving from citizens and residents of the United States to their countries of origin. It includes three related components: (1) an overview study examining the phenomenon and practice of diaspora philanthropy; (2) four commissioned case studies focused on diaspora philanthropy to the Philippines, Vietnam, Kenya, and Colombia; and (3) a compendium of institutions and programs that encourage and support diaspora giving initiatives. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Bertelsmann Foundation generously supported the research. The project was a joint initiative of The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc. (TPI) and the Global Equity Initiative (GEI) at Harvard University.
Excellence in Family Philanthropy
TPI has worked with a cohort of 20 community foundations committed to helping their family donors become more strategic and satisfied, and to creating resources and tools for the community foundation field at large. Participating community foundations have an opportunity for professional development and peer learning.
